Is this backwards compatible with 802.11ac?

In theory if you get it to work it should be backward compatible. I mostly got it for its Bluetooth capability.”, which I never got to work and the WIFI6 connection keeps on stopping periodically after about 5 mins or so and no amount of resetting (including system reboot) can fix that. Overall, I’d stay away from this product.

My Mobo only has one 3.0 slot for the graphics card. The other slots are all 2.0x1 or 2.0x4. Will this still work in those slots? I understand I may not get the full speed but as long as I can get at least 1Gb that's what I'm looking for. MSI tomahawk max mobo.

Dude...look at the motherboard interface....one wide and immediately after one one half as wide...if you mobo has an interface consistent with the interface....it will work.  So, first look at the interface on the bottom of the plug-in interface with the mobo...if it is consistent with an open slot in your mobo it will work.  The rest is just installation.  And I have to tell you my wife's machine on which this baby operates has internet connection that is way faster than it was pre this purchase.  Again, though.  Start by opening your box, and looking at the mobo.  If it has a two slot, one large close to the back of the machine and a smaller one immediately thereafter, you are likely golden....

Has anyone used this adapter further than 2 walls?  I would like to move my PC to the other end of my home.  My wireless gateway is on the other end.  Around 40 feet and 4 walls....

I have two of them and have no issues with distance or walls.  My gateway is upstairs with probably at least three walls and the ceiling for the first computer the other adds an additional wall and some distance to the first one, Great product.

About 3 to 4 feet. You can get extension cables for pretty cheap if needed. My PC is 2 walls and about 20 feet away from the router, pulling 600-700 Mbps on a gig line if that helps!

the OptiPlex 3040 is a "small form factor" PC - it is basically a "laptop in a desktop case" and while nice and small...and light...lacks the expansion slot for a desktop style wifi card. To utilize wifi on this PC you will need to go with a USB style option.
