I have replaced notebook hard drives for several people I know and my own.  All have been the same physical size - never encountered one that was a different size.  To get at your hard drive should be a fairly simple task.  On the bottom of your notebook should be a door that you simply remove and there is the hard drive.  You should not even have to remove the hard drive to check its height.  Plus, after removing the battery and making sure the computer is powered off and unplugged, you could temporarily remove your hard drive and check its label for brand and model number.  Then Google the specs for that model.  Another approach is to go to Device Manager in your Windows. Click on Disk Drives and it should show you the model number and brand of your present hard drive.  Loaded with that info, do a Google search for specs on that drive.  Good Luck!  You will love the new WD Black drive.

Does this come with the necessary mounting hardware?

No, This is a bare drive, you need to reuse existing mounting and connection hardware. Note that this is a notebook/laptop drive and while it can be mounted in a desktop, it would require a 2.5" to 3.5" drive bay adapter as well as the SATA signal cord and a free SATA power connector on the power supply plus a free 3.5" drive bay. For a Laptop, if it is to be used to replace an existing drive, you just reuse everything that is there already, but if it is for a secondary laptop drive (assuming your laptop has the second drive bay), you will need additional hardware from the laptop mfg to mount and connect it (see their online manual for details and parts needed). Ima newbie to laptops too but. Bought this hard drive for my friend cause he fried his hard drive. Im thinking that all u really need to do is see if it fits. Take out the hard drive in ur laptop and look at the measurements and see if this one has the same measurements. That's what i pretty much did and it seems like its been working pretty good.

Will this drive work in my late 2008 macbook pro?

I installed this drive in an "Early 2008" 15" MacBook Pro and it works well.  I used the instructions on iFixit to perform the installation.  I had to use another Mac laptop and DiskMaker X from liondiskmaker  to get an OS X Mavericks I could install on the new disk.  I had to use Bootcamp 4 to get Windows 7 64-bit drivers and BootCamp working.  In short, the disk is fine hardware for the Early 2008 15" MacBook Pro.  Apple's software support for installing OS X Mavericks is not good.

there are apple specific drives but this one more than likely should be compatible if you're still unsure check the box your mac came in a see it tells you the specs of the hard drive because as far as compatibilty goes all you need to worry about is HDD size

Hey George,
  These drives have a 2.5 inch format which is a standard for drives. I have 2 of these drives and they are excellent. I checked the dell support sight for you and These drives have the standard drive height 9.5mm and the M4400 drive bays are standard height. also checked Dells upgrade drives for this laptop and they are standard height as well. 9.5mm. so I can say they will fit 100%.

Try to upgrade Acer Extensa-4420 notebook internal hard drive (120GB 5400RPM SATA-1.5Gb/s) to 1TB 7200RPM SATA/600. Is the physical size of all internal hard drive universal?

The physical size of HDD come in 3 basic sizes. One for desktops, one for laptops, and msata. This is for laptops. no matter what GB size, they are all physical size.

Will this hard drive fit in and adequately replace the HD in an Inspiron N 5040?

As long as the current hard drive is a sata drive, I see no reason that this would not replace your current HD.  You will have to take your current HD out of its caddy and put the WD drive in its place.  If you are planning on using Western Digital's Acronis True Image, you will need some method of attaching the original HD to your computer so it can be copied to the new WD HD.  By the way Acronis True Image worked totally accurately on my new hard drive.  Just need to put the new HD in place of the original and somehow afix the old HD to the computer.  I was lucky in that my HP Pavilion dv7 had a secong HD slot.

Yes, this drive will fit your laptop. It is a little bit smaller capacity than the original drive, but it is a faster drive (7200RPM and probably a larger cache). You will need a recovery disk set or drive image though to reinstall your Windows operating system. If your current drive is still working and free or serious infection, make an image of the drive using the Windows 8 back up utility and make a Windows 8 Repair Disk to help you reload it. If it is not working and you did not make the recovery disk set when the machine was new, you will need to contact Toshiba tech support for a recovery disk set.
