DOES IT COME WITH A TONER ?

Yes mine came with toner. But at the same time I bought (after market high capacity toner) from eBay. So I had a spare ready to go in when it ran out. Because the one they send you is very limited, but is enough to get you started. Be sure to follow instructions when changing toners. there is a wiper you have to use on it. Just a couple swipes and your done.

Yes
It comes with a smaller capacity toner to get you started.
I have run my printer for over 6 months and have not replaced the cartridge. (I use ECO mode most of the time.)  The toner is far beyond it's stated capacity.
I bought a replacement toner cartridge with the printer and got a discount on the cartridge.

Does the top lift open for an open-bed scanner?

Yes it does. You might be interested to know that I've purchased six of these multi-function printers and every time I think I've finished, somebody buys it from me and I'm starting the shopping all over again.

I just completed a firmware upgrade this weekend; always makes me a little nervous doing the first one.  I can report it was ridiculously simple and only took a couple of minutes, after which the printer reset itself and was ready to go to work.  Truly, an impressive device!

Is this printer wireless capable?

Not directly.  The DN series have a wired ethernet port so you need to hard wire it.  I recall that Brother names their wireless series something like DNW.  However, there are several wireless bridges (I'm using a four port one from Netgear)  that can extend a wireless connection to devices which are then locally hardwired ethernet.

does this copier have wi-fi?

No, this model can only be connected to your network by cat5 or usb( niether provided). The wifi model is more expensive. On the order of 50 to 60 bucks if menory serves me.

Question 6

Description says it scans in COLOR.  Is that true?
I know it is Black/white printing, but color scans would be useful with my other printers.

I would like to confirm that it scans in Color?

Yes, it can scan in color, and the software comes with a advanced PDF editor as well so you can modify your scanned image PDF directly without purchasing another expensive software like Adobe Acrobat

does it print envelopes ?

Yes.

But like all printers of this type it will work best if you load them through the manual feed in the front and open the back of the machine so they pass straight through.

Putting them in the paper tray or letting them feed through normally will result in wrinkled envelopes.

Does this printer come with a usb printer cable or do I need to buy one for wired connectivity?

is it compatible with windows 8?

Yes it is.  I am running windows 8.  Printing is fast and 
clean copies.  Software is a little difficult to understand.

yes when connected to a wireless router via ethernet. but no this printer is not wireless on its own..
