Does this printer scan and/or print in color?

The printer does scan, black and white and in color. You can even feed in multiple pages from the top of the printer to quickly scan multiple items.

The printer does not, however, print in color.

What multifunctions?

I have only owned my printer for about 2 weeks, but I have not really had any malfunctions. The Printer performs very well and I am very happy with its performance. One exception, the manual feed needs to be attended when paper is inserted or it may print off-center. It lacks a tray to hold the paper correctly. But I consider that a minor issue as overall the printer is a very good buy, and I would purchase it again

Yes. It can be setup through manual setup as well as USB.

Does the printer come with a toner cartridge???

Yes, it comes with a (starter) toner cartridge and a drum unit ... although not sure if the drum is a full-fledged drum or also a starter, but everything you need to make you functional at the outset.  Know that your mileage may vary on how long the starter toner cartridge will last.  OEM toner cartridges and drums are insanely expensive; I have always bought knockoffs when the ones that came with the printer wear out.

will i be able to use this wireless for my single laptop if i dont have a wireless network and router?

You either have to connect the printer to a router via wireless or connect it to the router with a cable. Then your laptop has to conected via wireless or a cable. Or you can connect your laptop directly to the printer with a cable. But the cable is bought separately.

I want to know if it's a color printer or just black and white?

just black and white. It also has a lower print quality that a laser printer because it uses powder rather than ink, so if you are wanting to print pictures or nice flyers/ invites of any kind, this probably wouldn't be the best for you. It's awesome though for regular copies. I make around 100 to 200 prints per month, and I am really pleased with it.

Is the scanner compatible with windows 7?

We use this for printing and copies in Windows 7 but do not use the scanner.  I would assume the scanner function will work too.

Can you scan multiple items at once?

I don't understand the question.

It's like a regular copy machine.  There is a document feeder on top.

You can flip up the document feeder to open a flatbed paltten (like a copier).

You can stick 20+ pages in the document feeder which will scan one at a time.  You can stick multiple small items in the flatbed which will make one scan of all the items.

I'd imagine you can hook multiple 2540DWs to a network and they would all scan independently.

I don't see how you could think that anything with one scanning bar could independently scan multiple documents at once.  That's why I don't think I understand the question.

Does this printer scan to PDF?

Yes.  Download the manual for details.  It will scan to PDF, JPEG and somehow or other to an OCR-eligible file.  I have scanned only to PDF and that works fine.  Download and install the latest Brother Control Center Suite (# 4 or maybe #5 is newest) from brother[hyphen]usa[dot]com.  It is supposed to push the scanned file into your PC when you scan from the MFC, but on occasion doing a scan on the MFC doesn't get a response from my PC and I have to launch CC4 on the PC and command the scan to start from my PC.  Overall, a very minor and infrequent annoyance.

Does it work simultaneously over wireless and wired network?

i have it wired to my pc. i was also able to connect wirelessly from a different device, but did not actually print. i assume you meant two devices.
