Does the 50 sheet multi purpose tray pull the first sheet from the top or the bottom?

Top.  Also able to separately program which tray is pulled first when doing fax, print or copy.  (ie. copy can be set to pull from Tray 1 first and print could be set to pull from MP first)

WHERE DO THE FILES I SCAN GO TO?

If you use the software that came with the printer, you tell it directly where to save the scan.  If you use the printer's front panel, you can scan to a USB drive (it has a USB port on the front), a network share, an FTP server, a computer attached directly to the printer, or email.  I only use the scan to network share feature because all my home files are on a NAS server and it's the most convenient method for me.  You have to configure the destination share in advance through a software utility that comes with the printer, most of the above features require some upfront configuration.  The printer will auto-name the file to something like Scanned_001234.pdf, there's no way to input a file name when scanning, but since they will all wind up in one folder on your network you'll just periodically (or immediately) go through the scans and rename them.  The best part is, your PC doesn't have to be on at the time, only your NAS.

How well does this machine print photo and or color brochures?

We've printed only a few photos, but numerous cap statements/brochures, some on glossy, and they've been flawless. Definitely carries a professional level quality to it. Only issue we've had with this printer is the cost of the dran toners, but hey, that's goes for most.

Question 4

I replaced the black toner cart but the machine didn't reset.  It still keeps telling me to replace the black toner cart.  Any suggestions?

The original cartridges do not have a "flag" gear. This gear is required to reset the printer so make certain that your cartridge has one. I'm not allowed to include a link but you can find a how to on youtube.

More than likely your replacement cartridge is missing that gear. think "flag gear" for THIS printer.

btw the original cartridges still have a LOT of toner remain AFTER the warning is displayed (note that the originals that ship with the printer do NOT have this gear). Simply install the flag gear on whatever cartridge and vola! warning goes away and you can probably print another 1000 pages or so before the original cartridge finally gives it up. we use this printer via linux (which fully supports all functions). Hope this helps.

How is the memory upgraded and how much of an upgrade will this machine accept?

It has a toolless port on the side that accepts a single module of laptop DDR2.

The manual lists these required specs for the additional memory:
144-pin, 16-bit output, CAS latency 4, Clock frequency 267 MHz or more, capacity 64, 128, or 256MB, type DDR2 SO-DIMM, height 30mm (1.18 in).

The manual also states that the following modules can be installed:
128MB Kingston KTH-LJ2015/128
256MB Kingston KTH-LJ2015/256
128MB Transcend TS128MHP422A
256MB Transcend TS256MHP423A

I guess they have tested with these specific brands, but in all likelihood any other brand of the same or better spec will work.
