How do you program the keys? is this software based? is there a manual somewhere that I can look at to see if this meets my needs?

Yes, it is software based, so it only works on Windows. I couldn't find the manual online before I ordered it, but I did find the datasheet on the manufacturer's website. Mine came with a basic manual in the box that gave me a website where I could download the drivers which includes a utility to assign any key on the keypad to any keystroke or record a macro. It even lets you make different assignments for when you use the key with a modifier like ctrl or alt.
