There should be a flat plastic bracket with the Garmin to connect to a suction plate for the windshield. That attaches to the ball like device on the mount. Then the Garmin hooks up to the bracket. Careful not to push on any part of the display of the GPS unit

I am very pleased with my recent purchase of the Garmin Portable Friction Mount.  No matter where I place the mount on my dashboard it remains securely in place.  I can't believe I struggled for so many years using the section cup affixed to my windshield, only to have it pop off while I was driving.  I highly recommend this product.

is this friction mount compatibile with the Garmin Nuvi 2597 LMT 5" GPS Unit?

Not sure.  Did your Garmin come with a suction cup attachment? There is a plastic strip that the Garmin clips on to the top and bottom. In the middle is a circular spherical cavity that the friction mount ball snaps into. That would make it work.
