The product description says "DVI-D (F)" but in the image the DVI connector is clearly Male. Is the image correct and the description mistaken?

The image shows a female DVI connector as is in the description and is correct. The Display Port is male in photo and description and also correct. You may be mixing up which end is which

What is the difference between an "active" and "passive" DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter?

Passive adapters are direct wire connectors where the compatible signal is just relayed between the appropriate contacts on each plug. Active adapters take the signal from one side, run it through some circuitry to translate or boost the signal, and send it out to the proper contacts on the other side.
