Piercing the narrow end forces air and white through the membrane, causing leaks. The air pocket sits at the wide end—simply make a tiny hole at the wide end so air escapes gently without tearing the inner membrane or letting egg white flow out.
How does the auto-shut-off work?
When water dries out, the heater will be off and alarm will sound. The button won't auto switch off and It may appear the base is still very hot but it's actually shut off internally. Turning off the button will mute the alarm and reset for next use.

No. Actually you don't need a timer. This product automaticlly shut off when water is boiled dried. Measure the amount of water to control doneness. No timer is needed.
