If it's just a case, how do the lan ports work? Are they connected to anything?

The case comes with a IO plate like most computer cases. When you find the motherboard you want to use, it MAY or may not fit the IO plate supplied. In case it doesn't fit, you can purchase an IO plate made to fit your motherboard. Though i would recommend a motherboard from Aupermicro, since the IO plate for this chassis is slim compared to a normal one and it's not likely another manufacturer has a plate that fits this case. I ended up pricing together 2 servers with the same specs as a pre-built bare metal from super micro. The third one I bought as bare metal because the small savings is not worth the hassle of assembly.

is the IO shield removable ?

Yes. It is removable but the standard shields that come with most motherboards will not fit. You will need to find the right part from SuperMicro.

How am i suppose to mount the motherboard when there are just open holes where the motherboard would screw into?

The chassis ships with two-piece standoffs specific to this hardware. Insert the body from beneath the case and the nut threads on to it from the inside. Remove the punch holes from the plastic to allow them to pass through.

Is the riser card included?

The riser card is not included.
