How do I get the grid display to be the single beam of light? When I take the end off entirely the beam is not focused. It projects a softball sized ball of light on to objects instead of a fine point.

Unfortunately you can not get it to a single beam with out taking the light refracting lens off. Its a rather strong laser pointer so it won't be that small of a beam.

Do i need eye protection to toy around with this?

No. As long as a laser is 5mw or below you do not. But never point it into someone's eyes.
