The Revolver S has an 8th inch audio jack compatible with XBONE and PS4 controllers (xbox 360 requires 16th inch). This particular headset comes with a USB adapter with 7.1 Surround Toggle, Mute toggle, and Mic and Headphone volume control. This adapter is recognized by most USB compatible devices without modification, but does not list compatible with an XBONE. Most research suggest the Xbox is ONLY compatible through the controller, which means no 7.1 capabilities. Sorry!

I'm trying to decide between the Revolver and Revolver S. If I get the Revolver S do I have to use the 7.1 dongle or can I use it without it? Because I would like to use stereo sound sometimes and surround sound at other times.

The dongle is the only way to use it via USB, but there is a button to toggle the surround sound on and off.

Is there a way to buy the 7.1 dongle without the headset itself?

Might need to contact Kingston to get the soundcard from them directly, I know that you can plug in the SPDIF (optical enabled 3.5mm jack) into an external 7.1 surround sound card like the Vantech or Startech (~$30) ones and they work just as well if not better (from the reviews I've read online).
