Will this case work for a tray load slim drive?

Yes...as long as the size format is 12.7mm. Some drives are 9.5mm size format and they'd be too small for this. However Vantec does make a version in 9.5mm format.

Will this fit in the slot of a case that takes a 12.7mm slim optical drive? I have never done a slim one like this. It looks like an external optical drive.

This is a external enclosure for a slim optical drive. The purpose of this is so the optical drive now becomes portable. No, this will not fit in a laptop drive slot. It is powered by 3.0 usb. I hope this helps.

Will this product work with a Hitachi-LG optical drive Model CT21N, which was removed from an Acer Aspire 5745 laptop? I would like to convert my old drive for use with my current computer. Thank you.

I don't know for sure if your model will work with this product. However, and I'm only guessing, as long as the drive your using has sata ports you should be good to go. The drive is powered by 2 usb ports, 1 2.0, 1 3.0. FYI, the only con for this product is the port on the back where the usb cable plugs into is not tight. The cable has come out on me a few times.
