Pure sine wave, compact (compared to predecessor), silent, front LED info

Superb product from a very reliable company (APC). These guys are the go-to brand for UPSs, and this UPS is no exception. - The active regulation for power dips is great for my apartment because the heaters like to dim the lights when they come on. - Great battery life; I can squeeze almost a full hour out of it when powering my laptop. - Front LCD panel displays loads of useful stuff, like my current power consumption in watts. When the power goes out, it estimates how much longer it will last in minutes. - Preemptive mute option. This is genius! When the power goes out, it doesn't start beeping like crazy (unless you want it to). Now I don't have to open it up and cut out the beeper myself (which I have done to other UPSs before). - Modified sine wave. Won't mean much to most people, but I like the fact that it's not just an unfiltered square wave coming out.

Price, Quiet Operation compared with the APC I replaced. I have used APC for years but their pure sine wave unit was so loud that it could not be used in our studio.

The product is improved from my prior model without much difference in price. I like that the box is just a little bit smaller and better ventilated.

I have the base Mid-2011 21.5" iMac. I wanted to protect my investment and my files! The iMac uses an Active PFC power supply so a pure sine wave UPS is required for proper functionality. The USB connection on this unit integrates perfectly with the OSX power save panel. Connect the USB cable and a set of options for automaically shutting down the iMac while being powered by UPS become available. You can adjust to shut down after x minutes or x% of UPS power remaining. I was also concerned about the power draw, and was originally considering a larger unit - but with the iMac and one external drive connected the load is only about 20%, and the estimated battery runtime is about 40 minutes. Checked it by pulling the plug - got the notice on the iMac screen that it's now running on battery and to save your work soon. The display on the unit is very informative and it has a small form factor. For OSX compatibility, price, and performance this UPS can't be beat.

+ Size + Ready to Use out of the box + USB ports for other devices + Price

This unit is built like a tank, which is good because it needs to be sturdy to support the heavy battery inside. Detachable control panel is nice for testing, especially since nobody's going to put this beast of a unit on a table. Link software works well, but does not always send me an email like it's supposed to. Sine wave output works correctly with ThermalTake Toughpower Grand PSUs (which means that newer PSU won't kill power during a transfer from AC to battery).

I'm in IT and have purchased 50-60 of these units in the last 3 years with no problems. No DOA's and non have failed yet. I find that 550VA is great for single workstations like Core2Duo with duel 19" LCD's.
